How long does it take to obtain an Operator Licence?

Typically it will take 8 to 9 weeks to receive a decision on the your application. If you need to operate a vehicle quickly the best option is to apply for an Interim Licence which may allow you to operate within 4 to 5 weeks.

How do I demonstrate “Financial Standing”?

Normally this would be done with a Bank Statement in the name of the applicant, showing the required average over a period of 28 days. It is also possible to use a factoring agreement, audited accounts if the turnover of the applicant is above 10m gbp. In the case of a Sole Trader it may be possible to have another person guarantee the required amount using a Statutory Declaration.

Can I transfer an O Licence?

No, it is not possible to transfer a licence for example between a Sole Trader and a Ltd company, or a Ltd company and a Partnership, or indeed any other combination of the above.

When do I need to publish my Public Notice for an HGV application?

The Newspaper Notice has a 42 day window. The Notice can be placed up to 21 days prior to the application being made up to 21 days after the application.

Can I apply for more spaces on the application than I currently need?

Yes, you can apply for what is termed a “margin” which allows for expansion of the fleet. or the hiring in of vehicle.

Do I need to declare any involvement with businesses that have failed?

Yes, transparency is the key. Always ensure the Traffic Commissioner is aware of any personal Bankruptcy, or involvement in any businesses that have gone into Liquidation, Receivership or Administration.

Do I need to declare convictions?
